9 tips on how to avoid food waste

Did you know that every Paki throws more than 41 kilos of food in the trash every year? And that half of all the garbage produced in the country is food leftovers? These are the data obtained from a survey on food waste carried out in 2021 by PSR.

Very present, the idea that “it is better to sin by excess than by lack” generates economic and environmental problems. After all, in addition to making you spend more, the planet suffers from the unnecessary use of water and soil and the emission of pollutants during agricultural production.

However, this same survey revealed that 94% of respondents are aware of the consequences of this habit and know that they should try to reduce it. With that in mind, we created this list with tips on how to avoid food waste at home. Check out:

1. Go to the supermarket with a shopping list

Before going to the supermarket, plan your meals for the week and write down everything you will need. Then check what foods you already have in the fridge or cupboard and make your grocery list with the items you really need.

2. Shop more often

When we increase the frequency with which we go to the supermarket, it becomes easier to buy the products that we will actually use, which helps us to avoid stocks and food waste.

Therefore, it is more advantageous to shop once a week than once a month, for example.

3. Avoid stockpiling large amounts of food

As attractive as a promotion is, stocking up on food is an attitude that favors waste, as we are not always able to consume all products within the expiration date.

Thus, the ideal is to buy only what we know will soon be used. Another tip to take advantage of the offers without wasting food is to replace an item on the shopping list with products on sale.

4. Organize food by expiration date

When you arrive from the supermarket, always store the newest products behind or under the items you already have in the fridge or cupboard.

That way, items that have the closest expiration date will be used first, as they will always be on hand.

5. Reuse the leftovers from the previous day

Although many people don’t like to reuse leftovers, they can be consumed for up to 48 to 72 hours when stored in the refrigerator and in airtight containers.

To make leftovers more attractive and encourage their consumption, the tip is to use them in different dishes. For example, rice can be turned into dumplings or oven-baked rice, and meats can be used to prepare pies and fillings.

6. Freeze excess food

If you have prepared more food than will be consumed, try to freeze the excess in smaller portions.

Thus, you make your day to day easier by already having some semi-ready dishes and avoid food waste.

7. Don’t judge by appearance alone

It is very important to be aware of changes in the color, odor and texture of food, as they can indicate when an item is no longer in a condition to be consumed.

However, it is often enough to remove the damaged part so that products such as fruits, vegetables or vegetables can be consumed normally. So, before throwing it away, see if you can use the parts that are in good condition.

8. Enjoy food fully

Stems, husks and seeds often go straight to the trash, but they are often even more nutritious than the parts we eat on a daily basis. Therefore, it is worth informing yourself about when and how they can be used . Some examples are:

  • Potatoes can be eaten boiled or fried in their skins;
  • Fruit peels like pineapple, apple, mango etc. can be used in juices;
  • Cabbage stalks, watercress, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, etc. they can be sauteed or used in dumplings, pies and soups;
  • Vegetable peels can be used in whipped creams, purees and souffles;
  • Pumpkin and melon seeds can be roasted and served as an appetizer.

9. Plan your Christmas and New Year’s dinner very well

Gathering family and friends for Christmas and New Year’s dinner is often synonymous with a full table , which often also means wasted food.

In addition, the holiday menu usually includes a wide variety of dishes, reducing the size of the portions consumed by the guests. Keep this factor in mind when calculating the amount of food to be prepared.

Putting these tips into practice to avoid food waste helps you save money and contributes to the rational use of natural resources. You can only gain by adopting these new habits!
