AMERICAN BASKETBALL STAR BRITTNEY GRINER SENTENCED TO 9 YEARS IN RUSSIAN JAIL

American women’s basketball Star and Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia for drug smuggling and awaiting a sentence. She has been sentenced to 9 years in jail over attempting to smuggle less than 1 gram of cannabis into the country.

Prior to the verdict, Griner apologized to the court and asked for leniency in an emotional speech.

“I never meant to hurt anybody, I never meant to put in jeopardy the Russian population, I never meant to break any laws here,” Griner said. “I made an honest mistake and I hope that in your ruling that it doesn’t end my life here. I know everybody keeps talking about political pawn and politics, but I hope that, that is far from this courtroom.

“I want to say again that I had no intent on breaking any Russian laws. I had no intent. I did not conspire or plan to commit this crime,” she added.

The case has become a political uproar, the United States fighting to get Griner back to the country she belongs in. President Biden has been involved and even Elon Musk sharing his opinion on the matter on an episode of the “Full Send” podcast this week. “If the president is working so hard to free someone who is in jail in Russia for some weed, shouldn’t we free people in America?” Musk asked on the show.

“There are people in jail in America for the same stuff. Shouldn’t we free them too? My opinion is that people should not be in jail for non-violent drug crimes.” Musk’s statement holds truth and the pressure is on Biden to redouble his efforts and secure Griner’s release.
