Film Tunes by Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift Among 82 Deemed Eligible for Oscars’ Original Song Race
According to Variety, 82 songs from this year’s films have qualified for the Oscars in 2022. Lady Gaga’s “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick,” Rhianna’s “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Ciao Papa” from “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio,” Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “Nobody Like U” from “Turning Red,” and Taylor Swift’s “Carolina” from “Where the Crawdads S
The absence of Doja Cat’s “Vegas” from Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” was likely ruled ineligible because it wasn’t entirely original: it interpolates the Presley ’50s classic “Hound Dog,” which was apparently seen as violating the rules.
Although up to three songs can be entered per film, most studios choose to enter only one or two in order to increase the chances of one of them making the shortlist. “18 1/2,” “Killing Me Softly With His Songs,” “Me Vasantrao,” “1660 Vine,” and “Tuzhyasathi Kahihi” each had three songs entered. Members of the Academy’s music branch can now vote on the shortlist. The final five nominees will be chosen from a 15-title song shortlist announced on December 21.
This year’s eligible songwriting contributors include Selena Gomez, the Weeknd, Rihanna, Shawn Mendes, Brandi Carlile, Trent Reznor, Giveon, Jazmine Sullivan, and LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy.
